Nelson lahir dan dibesarkan di Abbott, Texas sebagai anak Myrle Marie (nama gadis: Greenhaw) dan Ira Doyle Nelson yang bekerja sebagai montir dan pemilik rumah biliar.[2] [iii] Kakek dan neneknya yang bernama William A. Nelson dan Nancy Elizabeth Smothers memberi Willie pelajaran musik yang dibeli dari pesanan lewat pos sejak usianya masih enam tahun. Ia menciptakan lagu pertamanya pada usia 7 tahun, dan sudah primary di band lokal ketika berumur nine tahun.[4] Willie bermain gitar, sementara adik perempuannya Bobbie memainkan piano.
